My Galician journey (Third Post – Family)

The anniversary ceremony and the garden reception The anniversary ceremony and the garden reception

There is nothing more special than to visit with folks you know -family- in a distant place and have them receive you as if you were at home, make you feel comfortable and shower you with affection and joy. It makes the travel experience much more enriching and enjoyable. This is what is happening to me in Pontevedra, Galicia.

On my third day in Europe I arrived at my destination, a hotel in La Lanzada, Sanxenxo, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world for me. I was invited to the 35th anniversary celebration of my cousin, Beatriz Fernandez and her husband Tino. It was celebrated at the ‘Pazo de Señorans’, originally a 16th century manor house, restored & refurbished to its former glory. There are many ‘Pazos’ or old-time country homes in this part of Galicia.

Roughly 70 guests witnessed a ceremony where the couple rededicated their vows and received tributes from family members - two handsome young men and one lovely sister – in effect declaring their love for each other after 35 years together. The ceremony was followed by a splendid reception in the garden where I got my first taste of the famous Galician seafood. There were ‘zamburinas’ (a local type of scallop), ‘pulpo’ (octopus), ‘navajas’ (razor clams) and various and sublime other delicacies.

After that an exquisite luncheon was served and then dancing took over the hall. As a surprise I was met by another cousin, Fernando Saavedra, a renowned university dean and favorite of mine, who had flown in for the occasion. At the dinner table, I sat next to his sister Sabela Fernandez, who brought me up to date with the latest news of the rest of the family! In my experience, ‘Galegos’ are usually easy going, affectionate people and in this case, it was no exception. Of course, most of us had been drinking the delicious ‘Albariño’ wine or the ‘Estrella de Galicia’ beer and everyone was in a festive and joyful mood.

Bea & Tino were marvelous hosts. Beatriz comes from my mother’s side of the family. We both come from the same (great) grandparents. She is an English teacher and an extraordinary mother to her 3 children. Full of independence and joy she has raised formidable children and bright, headstrong grandchildren! Tino, a retired banker, was the life of the party, smiling and laughing he had everyone entertained and engaged.

I can think of no more magical way to begin my stay here in Galicia than celebrating with the family I love on gorgeous day in the gardens of the ‘Pazo de Señorans’.

More on all of this in my next postings.
